Hello everyone,
At our school, we have been administering the TOEFL Primary® Test since the 2022 academic year to objectively measure our students’ true acquisition of English proficiency. In December 2024, we conducted our second round of testing.
(Please note that data for the LTE Course is not yet complete, so this report includes results from the Kindergarten and After School programs only.)
We are pleased to share the results below.
1.Number of Test Takers
A total of 341 students nationwide participated in this year’s TOEFL Primary® Test.
Kindergarten: 22 students
After School Regular Class: 188 students
After School Advanced Class: 131 students
2.Average Scores by Course
今回分析の対象となった当校のコースは以下の通りです。
The following courses were included in this analysis:
● Kindergarten K3 (Senior Kindergarten)
● After School Regular Class
● After School Advanced Class
For comparison, two benchmark averages were used (school names not disclosed):
● Average scores of several private elementary schools with strong English programs
● Average scores of several international schools, including IB (International Baccalaureate) schools, where students study core subjects in English
(Graphs can be opened in a new window by clicking on the images.)

■Kindergarten K3
Our K3 students achieved strong scores, demonstrating readiness for entry into the Advanced Course.
However, it is important to note that at this age, developmental differences between boys and girls can be significant, and sitting through a one-hour test can be challenging for some children. Therefore, individual variation may reflect more than just English proficiency.
■After School Regular Class
The Regular Course results show a clear and consistent improvement in English proficiency over four years.
By Grade 4, students achieved an impressive average score of 216, equivalent to Eiken Pre-2 to 2 Level.
They also greatly surpassed the benchmark average of several private elementary schools with strong English programs (light blue ★).
These results indicate that even in the Regular Course, students acquire a high level of English far beyond that of standard school-based English education.
■After School Advanced Class
Students in the Advanced Course also demonstrated steady growth in English proficiency over four years.
Their average scores were nearly identical to those of international schools (including IB schools) where students study academic subjects in English.
This confirms that students in our Advanced Course have reached a level of English proficiency sufficient for academic learning conducted primarily in English.
In particular, the average score of 221 among 4th graders corresponds to Eiken Level 2 or CEFR B1, which represents an exceptionally high level for this age group.
CEFR B1 Level Description:
・Can understand the main points of clear, standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, or leisure.
・Can deal with most situations likely to arise while traveling in an area where the language is spoken.
・Can produce simple connected text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest.
・Can describe experiences, events, dreams, hopes, and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
3.Summary and Overall Evaluation
We are very pleased to confirm once again that students’ English proficiency continues to grow steadily through Grade 4 as a result of our English education.
We also value that the 2024 results are consistent with those from 2023, indicating that Tokyo International School Kindergarten and After School programs have achieved a stable and measurable standard of English proficiency.
Moving forward, our goals are to further enhance the quality of our education by:
● Increasing the number of test participants to refine our data accuracy
● Applying insights from test results to improve our curriculum and instruction
● Communicating results and progress more clearly to parents
Thank you very much for your continued support and cooperation.
